The method

The POWER framework

The POWER framework is the core of The Octopus Principle's method: five principles, positioning, ownership, win, experiment, and routine, that help mid-sized companies move decisions to where the information is and empower their leadership team, instead of routing every question across the entrepreneur's desk.

Behind it is the octopus metaphor: two thirds of an octopus's neurons sit in its arms; decisions happen where knowledge and customer contact are. Each of the five principles answers a central leadership question, and every one of the 42 blockages that slow growth down is assigned to exactly one principle.

P for Positioning

Positioning means: a clear assessment of where you stand, purpose, and strategic direction. No more competence illusion and vague visions. Your team can only take responsibility if it knows what the company stands for and where it is headed.

Typical blockages in this principle: #2 Kompass ohne Nadel and #3 Die Gießkannen-Strategie.

O for Ownership

Ownership means: clear mandates, responsibility with backing. The decisive question is: who gets to decide what? Ownership is power plus means, never responsibility without authority.

Typical blockages: #25 Kapitän ohne Schiff and #16 Zollkontrolle im eigenen Schiff.

W for Win

Win means: cutting loose, clearing obstacles out of the way. You go from approver to enabler, and your team measures itself by results instead of activity.

Typical blockages: #8 Die Verzettelungs-Falle and #20 Die Entscheidungs-Starre.

E for Experiment

Experiment means: a radar for the future. Mistakes are valuable data points. Form hypotheses, test, evaluate, adapt: that way your company learns faster than the market changes.

Typical blockages: #26 Null-Fehler-Toleranz and #36 Das Innovations-Theater.

More on experiment

R for Routine

Routine means: anchoring the transformation. Recurring processes and rituals make the new the normal state, otherwise the old everyday wins. What repeats becomes muscle.

Typical blockage: #42 Fehlende Meeting-Hygiene.

Frequently asked questions about the POWER framework

What is the POWER framework?

The POWER framework is the core of The Octopus Principle's method. It stands for positioning, ownership, win, experiment, and routine: five principles that decentralize decisions and empower your leadership team. The goal is a company that moves like an octopus, not like a tanker.

Who is the POWER framework for?

For founders and managing directors of mid-sized companies with 15 to 200 employees whose business is growing while too many decisions depend on one person. And explicitly for the entire leadership team, because that is where the impact happens.
