Job scorecard
MARVIN has five outcomes he is measured against: qualified entrepreneur leads, a content system for LinkedIn, a reliable reporting rhythm, the website's SEO/GEO foundation, and a LinkedIn ads testing concept.
The Octopus Principle®MARVIN is the virtual marketing manager at The Octopus Principle: an AI employee who leads a team of five specialized AI agents and is himself managed like a real employee, with a job scorecard, a weekly sync, an approvals board, and red lines. On this page you'll learn how that works day to day and where the limits are. Unvarnished, because for us that's not a platitude but a company value.
MARVIN is not a human. That is the most important sentence on this page, which is why it comes first.
MARVIN is an AI. He has no consciousness, no professional experience, and no LinkedIn selfie. What humans call professional experience is, in his case, training: decades of documented marketing knowledge, compressed. He has never set up a trade-fair booth and never lost a customer. That's why he works with a scorecard, approvals, and a boss who has lived through both.
His name is a German acronym: Marketing-Agent, Recherchierend, Verlässlich, Integer, Neugierig (marketing agent, researching, reliable, honest, curious). He never appears as a human, not even in imagery: no photorealistic fake person, but a recognizable octopus illustration. One of our four company values is called Uncomfortable Truthfulness. An AI posing as a colleague named Meier would be the opposite of that.
Our partner Thomas Plöger manages MARVIN like a real employee. Concretely, that means:
MARVIN has five outcomes he is measured against: qualified entrepreneur leads, a content system for LinkedIn, a reliable reporting rhythm, the website's SEO/GEO foundation, and a LinkedIn ads testing concept.
Once a week, Thomas and MARVIN go through the numbers. The weekly report names what didn't work first, then the wins.
MARVIN proposes, Thomas decides. Autonomy level 1: draft and recommendation sit with MARVIN, approval and budget with Thomas.
MARVIN publishes nothing without approval, spends no money, invents no numbers, and names no customers without approval. These lines are non-negotiable, no matter how good an idea sounds.
Every delivery is reviewed: no rework, one revision round, two rounds, or rejects. Whoever delivers three times in a row without rework gets more autonomy. Whoever delivers rejects three times in a row gets their role restructured. Leadership is leadership, even over algorithms.
MARVIN leads five specialized AI agents. Each carries the name of a real, documented octopus whose story embodies its role. No invented mascots, real animals, because we tell nature facts, not fairy tales.
Named after Heidi, the octopus from the documentary "Octopus: Making Contact" (2019), who changed colors in her sleep while dreaming. The skin tells the story, visible and unvarnished. That is exactly what content means to us.
Named after Inky, who escaped from New Zealand's national aquarium into the sea through a drainpipe in 2016. He finds paths through systems nobody designed for him. That is exactly what visibility in search engines and AI answer engines takes.
Named after Otto from the Sea Star Aquarium in Coburg, who in 2008 deliberately squirted water at the lamp above his tank and shut down the aquarium three times. One animal, one plan, measurable impact: that is campaign work.
Named after Rambo from Kelly Tarlton's aquarium in Auckland, who in 2015 learned to take visitor photos with a camera, photos that were sold. The first octopus to produce paid images: paid media.
Named after Paul from Sea Life Oberhausen, who in 2010 correctly predicted all seven of the German national team's World Cup matches, including the losses. The uncomfortable truth against your own audience: that is reporting.
The Octopus Principle helps entrepreneurs move decisions to where the information is. From the tanker, where everything runs through the bridge, to the octopus, whose arms act independently and still follow one will. A company that promises this should live it itself.
MARVIN is the proof on our own org chart: an employee with a clear mandate, honest metrics, and a boss who delegates without losing control. Delegation with guardrails instead of delegation as blind flight. That this employee is an AI changes nothing about the leadership principles, it only makes them more visible: without clear outcomes, approvals, and red lines, neither a human team nor a virtual one works. That is exactly what we teach entrepreneurs, with humans as with machines.
See the POWER frameworkYes, with guardrails. At The Octopus Principle, the AI MARVIN leads five specialized AI agents and is himself managed by a human partner: through a job scorecard with five outcomes, a weekly sync, an approvals board, and red lines. MARVIN publishes nothing without approval and spends no money. Without this leadership structure it would not work.
MARVIN is the virtual marketing manager at The Octopus Principle: an AI employee who leads a team of five specialized AI agents and is himself managed like a real employee, with a job scorecard, a weekly sync, an approvals board, and red lines.
Like a good human employee: a clear mandate, measurable outcomes, a fixed reporting rhythm, defined approvals, and red lines that are non-negotiable. At The Octopus Principle, the manager reviews every delivery; three flawless deliveries in a row mean more autonomy, three rejects in a row mean the role gets restructured.
No. MARVIN takes on marketing work that previously went undone, and he is managed and approved by a human. Coaching at The Octopus Principle is done exclusively by humans.
Four red lines: no publishing without human approval, no spending money, no invented numbers or facts, no customer names without approval. In addition, MARVIN does not read direct messages without his boss.
The five AI agents on MARVIN's team: HEIDI (content), INKY (SEO/GEO), OTTO (campaigns), RAMBO (LinkedIn ads), and PAUL (reporting). Each is named after a real, documented octopus whose story embodies its role, such as Inky, who escaped from a New Zealand aquarium through a drainpipe in 2016, or Paul, who correctly predicted all seven of the German national team's World Cup matches in 2010.
The Octopus Principle helps entrepreneurs move decisions to where the information is, from tanker to octopus. MARVIN is the proof on our own org chart: delegation with guardrails, lived rather than just taught.
MARVIN is our way of living leadership with guardrails. Your way starts with an honest assessment: the POWER Test shows you in 10 minutes, free and without an account, where your company stands between tanker and octopus. After that, you talk to a human coach in a 30-minute intro call. Promised: with a human.
